Stereotyping people with mental illness
I decided to focus on the question regarding stereotypes instead. I have been researching into how those suffering mental illness are stereotyped, and found that it is very common for mental illness sufferers to be stereotyped as dangerous and violent. I found it interesting that you found mental illness is stereotyped as dangerous and violent. Do you think this is mainly due to a lack of education and stigma represented through the media - a very powerful sterotyping tool? I also think it can be taken the other way - people with mental illness can stereotype themselves - i'm not sure if you read James' comments on the Prof Pilgrim lecture, and also my comments on the lecture - as it also highlights how individuals with mental illness can seemigly stereotype themselves! I'm trying to find out whether David Pilgrim's talk on the history of psychiatric diagnosis is available, but the comments Fi is referring to are here.
I wonder whether whether there is a single stereotype of mental illness or whether there are stereotypes related to the major clusters e.g., depression/suicidal, anxiety/panic/obsessive, schizophrenic/paranoid, etc.? Somewhere fairly recently I saw a news or research item about the relative perceptions of acceptance of various disorders, with notable differences.

The stigma attached to mental illness is definately an area of interest to me. I have to agree there are a lot of stereotypes - mostly negative about mental illnesses. My aunty has schizophrenia as well as previously suffering from substance abuse and depression. If anyone met her they'd never pick it at first, she is the most fun, outgoing person I know but both her and my extended family are hesitant to talk openly with other people about her illnesses because of how she's been treated or viewed in the past. I work with t elderly and disabled and I have to admit even with having mental illnesses in my family I find I still get nervous when going to visit a new client with a mental illness, always a bit worried about how they might present or react to certain things. And that's even though in my experience the most unpredictable, unpleasant clients have been the grumpy ones without any mental illness at all!
